How hard it is to believe ourselves real people, deserving of love and happiness. All I knew to do was write.īitterthorn is a story about loneliness, and how monstrous we can feel when we are isolated and unloved. ![]() This time, it was a pain almost unbearable. As a survivor of childhood abuse and neglect, isolation and loneliness have been old, painful acquaintances. I wrote and revised Bitterthorn in the months after my mother's death, when I was living alone during a year and a half of off and on lockdown in London. I think it's the best thing I've written so far, and I hope you like it too.
